We are proud to announce the first successful MICRODEEP® PIXEL implantations in Europe following CE marking, with initial procedures carried out in Spain and France.
The very first implantations took place in Spain at Hospital Niño Jesús in Madrid, where Dr. Marcelo Budke implanted five electrodes using a frontal approach targeting the insular region. This milestone marks the introduction of PIXEL technology into clinical practice in Europe following CE approval.
Reflecting on this achievement, Dr. Budke highlighted the clinical impact of combining advanced technologies: “This combination of robot-assisted SEEG and insula-specific DIXI medical electrode coverage enables safer and more precise sampling of a region that is historically difficult to access.” He also acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the procedure, expressing gratitude to the epilepsy surgery team as well as to DIXI medical and Medtronic for their technical support. He emphasized that “advances like this directly benefit patients with insular epilepsy by improving diagnosis and expanding their treatment options.”
Shortly thereafter, the first implantations in France were performed on June 5, 2026, at the Pediatric Neurosurgery Department of the Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant(HFME), part of the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL). The procedures were led by neurosurgeon Dr. Pierre-Aurélien Beuriat, who successfully implanted two insular MICRODEEP® PIXEL electrodes with 15 contacts. The surgeries were carried out at the Hôpital Neurologique Pierre Wertheimer.
This work was conducted in close collaboration with Dr. Karine Ostrowsky-Coste, head of the neurophysiology exploration unit, highlighting the multidisciplinary approach essential to these advanced procedures.
These first cases in Spain and France represent a key milestone in the European roll out of MICRODEEP® PIXEL technology. We warmly thank all the clinical teams involved for their trust and pioneering efforts, and we look forward to supporting further adoption across Europe.
